Former NFL Athlete Antonio Brown Files Not Guilty Plea in Murder Attempt Trial
Former NFL star Antonio Brown is traveling to Miami to face an attempted murder allegation related to a shooting that took place in May, with his lawyer filing a not guilty response on his behalf.
Jail documents in Essex County, New Jersey, show that Brown was freed on Tuesday morning for his relocation to the state of Florida. Brown, among the most famous athletes in the NFL, had forgone extradition to Florida from New Jersey, in which he was held after being arrested in the city of Dubai.
Brown’s lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, stated in an email that he has already submitted a written not guilty plea to the murder attempt accusation. Brown could be in a Miami courtroom as early as Wednesday early for a release session, Eiglarsh added.
Based on his detention order, Brown is charged of taking a firearm from a safety staffer after a star fighting contest in May and shooting multiple rounds at a person he had confronted with previously. The alleged victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, informed police that one of the bullets scraped his neck.
Eiglarsh asserted that Brown was only protecting himself from Nantambu.
“The steps he was obliged to take were solely in self-defense against the reported victim’s aggressive behavior. Brown was targeted that night and responded within his lawful privilege to safeguard himself,” Eiglarsh said.
Brown was not promptly arrested because at first police did not consider Nantambu as a target. It not until later in May that Nantambu delivered a full statement about the incident to officers and pointed out Brown as the shooter, the report indicates.
According to his digital posts, Brown had been residing in the city of Dubai for a number of weeks. In a post after the confrontation, Brown stated he was defending himself because he was “jumped by numerous persons who attempted to rob my possessions and cause bodily damage to me.”
A level two murder attempt allegation in the state of Florida carries a maximum 15-year incarceration penalty and up to a ten thousand dollar penalty in the event of a conviction.
Brown has faced several court problems over the years. He before had been accused of physical attack of a truck operator, various domestic violence allegations, inability to pay family payments and further incidents.
During a recent game with Tampa Bay against the New York Jets, Brown stripped off his jersey, shoulder pads and accessories and exited the stadium, leading to his termination by the Buccaneers and practically ending his football journey.
Brown, who completed a dozen years in the league, was an elite receiver who spent the bulk of his time with Pittsburgh. During his professional life, Brown had nine hundred twenty-eight receptions for over 12,291 yards, the 28th greatest of record. He was a multiple-time Pro Bowl pick.
