Wonder Man Preview Unveils The MCU's Most Meta Series To Date
The Marvel studio has heard that viewers could be feeling some superhero fatigue, so they've decided to incorporate that very idea into their upcoming superhero series.
That's right, the debut preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a meta twist on the MCU.
The trailer, which premiered on October 10th, also subtly pushed the Wonder Man launch date back from its original end of 2025 slot into early 2026.
Why another superhero movie? People is tired of superheroes. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man resonated with me on a profound level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reinvent the entire category of storytelling.
The reporter replies: "Have you considered about casting?"
The preview then cuts to series star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's watching the interview on his phone, and the trailer concludes.
What We Know About Wonder Man
We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a meta take on the MCU. The series features Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who transforms into a superhero (Wonder Man).
The rest of the cast includes Ben Kingsley returning as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's manager Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as DODC officer P. Cleary.
Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Strategy
We don't know much else about the plot of Wonder Man, but it's clear that the studio plans to poke some fun at itself.
In the aftermath of Deadpool & Wolverine, it appears like the studio is fully committed on self-referential comedy. Will that work without the star power of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman? We'll have to wait and see.
